Taylor Griffin
Taylor Griffin is a producer, drummer and recording artist known for his groove-based music that blends elements of jazz with alternative and Latin influences. With a passion for music that began in his youth, Taylor’s journey into jazz was sparked by an inspiring performance from visiting jazz students to his high school. This experience led him to pursue a Bachelor of Music in jazz performance at Auckland University, where he honed his craft and developed his unique sound.
In February 2024, Taylor released his debut EP, which quickly gained attention by charting at number nine on the New Zealand album charts—a significant achievement for a jazz release. His music is characterised by its rhythmic complexity and rich textures, drawing from his background in playing various genres, including metal and funk.
For Taylor, creativity is a vital means of expression that brings a spark of colour to the world. Whether behind the drum set or collaborating with fellow musicians, he finds joy in the creative process, where he can be his authentic self. The collaborative spirit of making music with others in a band setting is where Taylor feels most at home, as it allows him to externalise who he truly is without any pretences.
“When you’re doing something creative, especially something that you love and that you’re really passionate about, you can just be yourself. And it’s easy. It’s the easiest thing in the world to do.”
A Ngatea-based producer and drummer, he blends jazz with alternative and Latin influences to create groove-driven, rhythmic music. For him, expressing his authentic self and finding joy in both the solo and collaborative aspects of making music is a way to explore his creativity.
