Finn Ogle & Laura Quin
Laura Quin’s musical journey began in early childhood, encouraged by parents who provided her with a solid and supportive foundation. From a young age, Laura was immersed in music, an experience that shaped her into a multi-instrumentalist with a passion for various forms of musical expression.
For Laura, creativity is intertwined with the joy of play. Her philosophy centres on maintaining a sense of childlike wonder and enjoyment in her music. This playful approach is evident in her daily practice and highlighted by a memorable wedding performance, where she and her partner, Finn, chose to play a set of tunes instead of the traditional first dance. This moment reflected a commitment to creating meaningful and joyful experiences through music.
Laura’s impact extends beyond performance; her music also weaves into her family life. She values the subtle ways her children connect with her music, such as recalling moments of them listening to her play piano. Through both public performances and private practice, Laura finds fulfilment in the act of creating and sharing music, staying true to her roots while continuously evolving as an artist.
“Art is a way to share a piece of yourself with the world.” – Laura Quin
Finn Ogle has been immersed in folk music since his teenage years with his creative practice thriving in informal settings—whether in earlier days busking on the streets, or participating in intimate sessions with friends. He deeply values the spontaneity and magic that arise from these casual environments.
Recent challenges, including a significant shoulder injury, temporarily halted his ability to play the fiddle, his primary instrument. However, his passion for music remained, leading him to the tenor guitar, an instrument that resonates with him due to its tuning, which mirrors that of the fiddle. This discovery reignited his joy for playing music, allowing him to reconnect with old tunes and explore new ones.
For Finn, creativity is a deeply spiritual experience tied to identity and heritage. His appreciation for goes beyond mere performance; it is a way to connect with his ancestors and his own sense of self. Finn also finds inspiration in Māori culture, particularly the concept of taonga tuku iho, which enriches his understanding of his artistic practice. Through his music, Finn encourages connection with both his roots and his current creative journey.
“The beauty of creativity is in its ability to constantly evolve and inspire new ideas.” – Finn Ogle
