Bex Stubbs

Bex Stubbs’ creative practice spans multiple disciplines, including printmaking, painting, drawing, sculpture, design, and carving. Her work is often expressed through storytelling, drawing from local legends, myths, and personal narratives. Through her art, Bex aims to create pieces that not only convey a meaningful story but also provide joy to those who engage with them.

As an art teacher, Bex is dedicated to fostering creativity in her students, from primary through to high school. She believes that creativity is an essential part of life, offering a calming way to escape the business of the world around us. Watching her students transform from having a bad day to becoming fully immersed in their creative projects is a reflection of how she herself feels when creating—free, relaxed and connected to something larger.

“Creativity is built in. It’s one of the most important things. It’s what makes everything worthwhile.”

One of Bex’s recent projects, a doll fashioned from bone and antler, exemplifies her ability to blend humour, beauty and the unusual into her work. The piece not only brought her immense joy but also sparked connections with others who shared their own stories and memories inspired by the doll. For Bex, this interaction is a testament to the unifying and enriching power of art, which she strives to harness in all her creations.

A versatile artist living in Waitomo, her creative practice spans printmaking, painting, sculpture and more, often exploring local legends and personal stories. Creativity offers a calming escape for her, fostering connection and joy through the meaningful narratives her work shares.
